Early Start Potty Training

I first heard about infant potty training in my early childhood classes when I was in college and I was fascinated with the concept. I also found a moms group on cafemom.com that consist of moms that help each other with infant potty training. I didn't know that the US is one of few countries that don't potty train their children before 1 years old, which clearly told me it's possible. I also met a lady in kindermusic class that potty trained her son at 1 years old so I started to research more. After reading many resources about infant potty training I decided that it was something I was going to try. Most experts say to start between birth and 6 months but The Baby Whisperer says to start when they can sit up, so I didn't start unitl 7 months because I was waiting for Colby to be able to sit up on his own. Research shows that it's much easier to learn at a young age than it is after 2 years old because children have learned that you are suppose to eliminate in a diaper and toddlers are more defiant than an infant. The younger they are the more they care about pleasing you!  I listed several websites that are helpful and "Early -start Potty Training" by Linda Sonna, PHD is a good book also.

I started putting Colby on the potty first thing in the morning, twenty minutes after drinking and eating, and when he shows signs of pooping.

I know it sounds crazy but Colby went poo-poo and pee-pee in the potty all day today and he is only 7 months old. No this doesn't mean that he is potty trained by any means, he can't even walk yet. It's just preparing him and teaching him that poo poo and pee pee goes in the potty and not in his diaper.

Infant potty training experts say that by starting this young a child can be completly potty trained by 1 years old at the youngest and 24 months at the lastest.

Also, contrary to what some people say, early potty training does not cause emotional problems. Research shows that the only aspect of potty training that causes emotional problems are harsh punishments, aggravated behaviors, and cruel attitudes directed toward the child during the learning process.

I thought I would pass on this great information in case your interested.
